Values Become Reality
Hey team. So, here we are. Another beautiful day, another week. It’s hard to believe that May is already here.
Values become reality when they truly guide our decisions. David Horsager said that. I saw that on social media and I was like, “Wow, that’s a good quote.” And it fits, because we have core values, and Monday Message is about core values.
So because we have core values, and because our Monday Message is about core values, I thought that recognizing that our values become a reality when they guide our decisions is important. When we make decisions based on our core values—be our purpose, be valuable—nothing less will do.
Humility. Not too afraid to pick up trash. I was talking with a gentleman the other day having coffee, and we were talking about his interactions with team members. He doesn’t work here; he works someplace else. But I thought, “Man, he fits our core values.”
As I was talking to him, he was saying, “I treat the housekeeping staff—they work with us in the area that I work—but they have an important job. If I see trash, I just pick it up and throw it away.” And this is a guy who’s a supervisor working over security at a facility, and yet he interacts with those around him in a humble way. That’s an amazing thing.
Those are the values that we follow, but they become a true reality when they guide our decisions. Humility should guide your decisions. Value should. Our purpose should drive who we are and what we do.
Our investment. Putting people above self. That is awesome. Service above self. That’s a good thing—to invest in our community and the people we serve, our own team members, and the things that we can do to help. Maybe it’s the shift that follows us, like taking out the trash. Or, in some cases depending on your area of influence and where you’re working, the things you can do to set up the person that’s taking a shift behind you can be a really powerful thing—and helpful in such a way that it shows the values that we have of investment.
Same with resolve. Not quitting when times get hard. Doing the job regardless of how tough it is, or how rainy it is, or how hot it is, or how cold it is outside.
Being transparent. Even at a cost. When you make a mistake, owning up to it and telling on yourself so that we can get ahead of it and solve the problem. I so value, as the vice president and just as a human being, seeing people take ownership of their mistakes. That’s valuable to the company.
We like to eat cake. Another beautiful value—celebrating together, celebrating people’s wins, clapping for others, excited about others winning and surviving and doing great things. Being able to sit down and have a meal together like we did recently at Cinco de Mayo, and as we will this summer as we get closer to having our summer barbecues.
Having those moments to celebrate with each other and eat a little bit of cake. Celebrating others’ wins. And when we see people doing great work, giving them a wheel spin, celebrating them, celebrating time together—that’s an awesome thing as a family.
All right, so God bless you guys. Have a wonderful week, and remember: our values become a reality when they dictate the things that we do. When that hits and we make decisions based on our value system, then we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they matter.
All right. God bless you guys. You have a wonderful week. I’ll talk to you next week.
